-by-one. the first one getting attention is chuck hagel for defense secretary. how big of a bat doll you think this is. where do you think it will play out? >> this is the biggest of the five nomination fights we know about. maybe a vote against hagel. few republicans, none come to his defense. few republicans might vote for him. he has a contentious personal background. hard, acerbic and hard to work with. more important than that is the record on the issues. opposed to iranian sanctions. he opposed the iraq surge. defended dialogue with hamas. refused to join in a letter calling on e.u. to condemn hezbollah. he had a pejorative comment to jewish lobby. he has taken stances that indicateed he is less than supportive of the relationship with israel. >> there are two key democrats that could factor in how this goes. one is new york democratic senator schumer. >> he is staying quiet on the fight. talk about the real oppositio opposition. i think there will be some tough hurdles to get over with republicans. but i don't think there is enough democratic fight to stop the nomination. out of loyalty
hagel for defense secretary as early as tomorrow. when senator hagel left the senate in 2008, you praised his clear voice and stature on foreign policy and national security. do you stand by that praise? >> well, whoever is nominated for secretary of defense is going to have to have a full understanding of our close relationship with our israeli allies, the iranian threat and the importance of having a robust military. so whoever that is i think will be given a thorough vetting, and if senator hagel is nominated, he'll be subjected to the same kind of review of his credentials as anyone else. >> several of your colleagues have come out against his appointment saying he's not sufficiently supportive of israel or tough enough on iran among other issues. do you share their concerns? >> well, i'm going to take a look at all the things that chuck has said over the years and review that and in terms of his qualifications to lead our nation's military. >> but do you still believe he has the stature on foreign policy and national security to be secretary of defense? >> well, he certainly
will put on the screen. >> chuck hagel said nothing as far off the table but one that believe us in the prospects for negotiation. we have been ready to negotiate under the right set of circumstances with iran for the last several years with our friends and allies so, force is the table but i'm glad we have people like the president and like chuck hagel who will be very careful when you start throwing around the terms -- >> he says it's not feasible. do you agree it is not feasible. >> what is the not feasible? >> military option? >>> military option is always feasible, you tell me what the option is. are we going to blow up tehran or go after facilities that might be well pro-toerktd hidden? and i think bob gates, the previous secretary of defense, who pointed out the difficulty of striking these places is a real one. so any military option is feasible in terms of dropping bombs but what is the result of that military attack? with respect to the revolutionary guard, he has reasons for why he didn't go along with that resolution at the time and that will be explored in the confir
